Service tax registration can be done online as well as manually. You can either visit the Commissionerate with whom you are registering or visit www.aces.gov.in website to get yourself registered. Every service provider who has or expects to provide services of value more than ₹9 lacs in any financial year must get himself registered with CBEC. This must be mandatorily done. For those who have a turnover less than ₹9 lacs may or may not get registered.

To get Service Tax number all you have to do is fill up form ST-1 and submit it with the Commisionerate you are getting registered with. You can submit the form online too but you'll have to submit a hard-copy with the Commissionerate as well. The documents that need to be furnished along with it are a copy of PAN Card, ID proof, Address proof, proof of ownership, other corporate numbers like VAT etc. and photograph.

As per Rule 4 of Service Tax Rules, 1994, the superintendent will verify your application and either accept of reject it. If accepted you will receive your Service Tax Certificate in Form ST-2 online or by post, whichever mode you choose. If the superintendent doesn't intimate the assessee within 2 days then it will be deemed to be accepted.

First time users who wish to register online must first create a username. After filling all the details you will receive a system-generated password on your e-mail id. You can then login and change your password. Submit your application for service tax registration then.
